HOUSTON (AP) — A hacker apparently accessed private photos and emails sent between members of the Bush family, including both former presidents, and a spokesman for George H.W. Bush said acriminal investigation is under way.
The Smoking Gun website said the hacker, who went by the online moniker "Guccifer," gained access to emails, photos, private telephone numbers and addresses of Bush family members and friends.
The website displayed photos it said came from the hacker, including one that purported to show the elder Bush during his recent near-two-month stay in a Houston hospital where the 88-year-old was treated for complications arising from a bronchial infection.
The authenticity of the photos and other details on the website could not immediately be confirmed. A spokesman for former President George H.W. Bush declined to comment on the reports.
"There's a criminal investigation and, as such, there's nothing else we can say," Jim McGrath told The Associated Press Friday.
The FBI in Houston, where Bush lives, was similarly tight-lipped.
"We do not confirm or deny the existence of any investigation," Houston FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said.
Freddy Ford, a spokesman for former President George W. Bush, who has a home in Dallas, also said Friday he "won't be commenting."
The FBI in Dallas referred calls to the Secret Service, which did not immediately return a message left Friday morning.
The word "Guccifer" is plastered across the photos published on the Smoking Gun website in translucent, neon blue print. The website quotes "Guccifer" as describing himself as a veteran hacker who has long been in the government's sights.

Ex-President Bush Gets Hacked
By JONATHAN KARL | ABC OTUS News – 4 hrs ago
Former president George H.W. Bush was the victim of a computer hacker who gained access to confidential emails and other electronic correspondence between members of the Bush family and friends, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed to ABC News.
Authorities have begun an investigation into the incident, a spokesman for Bush told ABC News. The spokesman could not confirm the content of the emails that were hacked.
"The Secret Service is investigating this matter," said Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan.
The unidentified hacker claims to have gained access to three years of personal emails dating back to 2009. The hacker has posted several of the personal photos online, including one of the elder Bush in the hospital.
The hacked material also includes telephone numbers, home addresses for dozens of Bush familymembers, including both former presidents. It also includes the security code for George W. Bush's home in Dallas.

Secret Service opens investigation into hacking of Bush family email

The U.S. Secret Service has opened an investigation into the hacking and publishing of personal emails between members of the Bush family, Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary confirmed to Yahoo News on Friday morning.
Leary would not provide further details as the investigation is open.
The Smoking Gun website on Thursday published what appear to be photos and correspondence details from former Presidents George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush; former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush; Dorothy Bush Koch, sister of George W. Bush and Jeb Bush; and other materials obtained by the hacker. These include emails and photos related to the senior Bush's recent extended hospitalization for bronchitis and other ailments.
Email addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses were said to be included in the hack, which reportedly involved six email accounts for members of the Bush family and messages written between 2009 and 2012.
From the Smoking Gun:
Correspondence obtained by the hacker indicates that at least six separate e-mail accounts have been compromised, including the AOL account of Dorothy Bush Koch, daughter of George H.W. Bush and sister of George W. Bush. Other breached accounts belong to Willard Heminway, 79, an old friend of the 41st president who lives in Greenwich, Connecticut; CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz, a longtime Bush family friend; former first lady Barbara Bush’s brother; and George H.W. Bush’s sister-in-law.
The hacker, who used the alias Guccifer, told the Smoking Gun that he obtained photographs sent by George W. Bush to his sister of paintings he was working on, including self-portraits—one of the former president in a shower and another in a bathtub, both of which were provided to the Smoking Gun.
The hack also reportedly exposed emails that indicated how serious George H. W. Bush's health situation had become. The former president's chief of staff, Jean Becker, reportedly wrote to Bush's children: "Your dad’s funeral team is having an emergency meeting at 10 a.m. just to go through all the details," and said this information “fell under the broadening category of things NOT TO TELL YOUR MOTHER.”
